Ingredients
- 1 strong double-style serving of Urban Calm Lioness Espresso, cooled
- 150 to 200 mL chilled tonic water
- Ice
- 1 strip orange peel or a thin orange wheel
How to make it
- Fill a tall glass generously with ice.
- Pour in the tonic water.
- Slowly pour the cooled Lioness over the back of a spoon.
- Finish with orange peel.
- Stir before drinking if you prefer a fully mixed flavour.
Why the coffee goes in last
Pouring the coffee over tonic helps preserve the visual layer and keeps the drink from foaming too aggressively.
Choose a tonic you actually like
Tonic water is not neutral. Some are sweeter, some are more bitter and some have strong citrus or botanical flavours. A dry tonic keeps the finished drink more coffee-forward.
Want it softer?
Add a small splash of orange juice or a teaspoon of maple syrup. Keep it subtle or you lose the reason to make an espresso tonic in the first place.
For a sweeter iced drink, make the Golden Maple Glow Up. See all recipe ideas in the Recipes & Rituals guide.
Before you brew
An espresso tonic needs a concentrated coffee base. Use the mushroom coffee brewing guide, or start with Lioness Espresso.
