How to Brew Mushroom Coffee: Whole Bean, Ground and K-Cups

The easiest approach is to keep your normal routine

One of the things I like most about coffee-first mushroom coffee is that the preparation does not need to become complicated. If you already know how you like to make coffee, start there.

Urban Calm comes in whole bean, ground and K-Cups, and each format is meant to work in a familiar way. The mushrooms do not create a special brewing ritual that you need to learn before your first cup.

Whole bean

Whole bean is a good fit if you already grind coffee at home and like having control over the brew. Grind size should follow your brewing method just as it would with regular coffee. A drip machine usually wants a medium grind, French press is generally coarser, and pour-over can be adjusted depending on the brewer and recipe you use.

Start with the amount of coffee you normally use. If the cup tastes too light or too strong, adjust from there. I would rather have someone make one familiar cup and fine-tune it than feel like they need to learn an entirely new ratio because mushrooms are involved.

Ground coffee

Ground coffee is the simple middle ground. You do not need a grinder, but you still get the experience of brewing real coffee. For many households, that is the format that fits most naturally into the morning.

Use it in the brewer you already use for ground coffee. Drip machines, pour-over brewers and French press can all work when the grind suits the method. Again, start with your usual coffee routine and adjust by taste.

K-Cups

K-Cups are the convenience option. Put one into a compatible brewer and make a cup the way you normally would. Our current guide suggests the 8 oz setting as a practical starting point, then you can choose a smaller cup for a stronger brew or a larger cup if you prefer it lighter.

I do not think convenience should be treated like a bad word. Some mornings you want to weigh beans and make a careful pour-over, and other mornings you need coffee in two minutes. Both can be part of a real coffee routine.

Do you need to blend mushroom coffee?

Not when you are brewing roasted mushroom coffee like Urban Calm. The idea that mushroom coffee needs a blender usually comes from instant powders, latte mixes or other products that dissolve directly into water.

With brewed mushroom coffee, your job is simply to make the coffee. Add milk, cream or sweetener afterward if that is how you normally drink it, but there is no special mixing step required because mushrooms are in the formula.

What water temperature should you use?

You can follow the same general principles you use for regular coffee. Water that is too cool may under-extract the coffee, while very hot water can make some coffees taste harsher. Many coffee brewers handle this automatically, which is one reason I would not make temperature more complicated than it needs to be.

If you already have a brewing setup that gives you coffee you enjoy, use it. Mushroom coffee does not require a separate temperature rule.

Can you make iced mushroom coffee?

Absolutely. Brew it as you would regular coffee for an iced drink. You can pour a stronger brew over ice, chill coffee ahead of time or use cold brew methods if that is your preference.

The same goes for lattes, mochas and other coffee drinks. Mushroom coffee can be the coffee base in any recipe where you would normally use brewed coffee. You do not need a special version just because the mushrooms are already included.

Does brewing change the mushroom extracts?

The mushroom ingredients in Urban Calm are extracts that have already been produced before they are incorporated into the coffee. We are not asking the customer to perform the extraction step at home through brewing.

That is another reason the format works for me. The technical ingredient processing happens before the product reaches you. Your part is still the familiar one: make a cup of coffee you enjoy.

Keep the first cup simple

If you are new to mushroom coffee, use the brewer, mug and routine you already know. There is no advantage in changing everything at once.

Once you know how the coffee tastes in your normal setup, then experiment if you want to. Try it iced, change the ratio or pull out the French press on the weekend. The point is that mushroom coffee can fit your coffee ritual instead of replacing it.
