At 1,600 metres above sea level, in the volcanic highlands of Timaná, Huila, Colombia, 53 women grow the coffee that fills every bag of Urban Calm Coffee. Every bean is direct traded, carefully roasted in Calgary.
A Place Made for Exceptional Coffee
Huila is Colombia's most celebrated coffee-growing region, producing more specialty coffee than anywhere else in the country. High altitude, rich volcanic soil, warm days, cool nights, and abundant rainfall slow the ripening of every coffee cherry, allowing sugars and flavour compounds to fully develop. The result is a coffee known for its natural sweetness, bright acidity, and remarkable complexity. The farms surrounding Timaná are small family plots nestled beneath native shade trees, banana plants, and corn. Here, coffee is still grown much the way it always has been with patience, care, and human hands.

Coffee Grown by Women. Crafted with Purpose. Coffee is one of the world's most female-dependent industries. Women perform much of the harvesting, sorting, processing, and quality control, yet only a small percentage of farms are owned or managed by women. Urban Calm partners exclusively with the women of ASPROTIMANA, a cooperative in Timaná dedicated to producing exceptional specialty coffee while creating economic opportunity for local families. Through the cooperative's Women's Coffee Program, 53 women have received the training and resources to manage their own farms, operate their own micro-mills, and oversee every step of production from ripe cherry to export ready coffee. Fair trade premiums earned through the cooperative have helped build schools, healthcare facilities, storage warehouses, and ongoing agricultural education within the community. Great Coffee Isn't Picked. It's Chosen. Coffee cherries don't ripen all at once. Instead of harvesting entire branches by machine, every cherry is hand-picked only when perfectly ripe. The same trees are visited several times throughout the harvest so only the best fruit is selected. After harvest, each woman processes her coffee in her own micro-mill using the traditional washed method. The process includes: Hand sorting, Depulping, 16–20 hours of carefully monitored fermentation, Thorough washing, Slow drying on raised beds Every decision during processing shapes the final flavour of the coffee. The result is a clean, vibrant cup that reflects the care invested long before roasting ever begins.

Small-Batch Roasted in Calgary Great roasting isn't about changing exceptional coffee it's about revealing it. Once the green beans arrive in Calgary, every batch is roasted in small quantities to showcase the natural character developed in Huila. Rather than roasting dark enough to overpower origin flavours, we carefully guide each roast through four stages: Drying, Maillard development, First crack , Final development The goal is simple: preserve the caramel sweetness, chocolate richness, and vibrant fruit notes that make Colombian coffee so exceptional. Every roast is designed to let the origin tell its own story.
