First, an important clarification: Cordyceps is not going to turn you into a zombie.
The Last of Us borrowed a very real idea from nature: certain fungi can infect insects and alter their behaviour. But those fungi are extraordinarily specialized to their insect hosts. The Cordyceps-related species studied for human use are a different story, and there is no evidence that drinking Cordyceps mushroom coffee can produce anything remotely like the television version.
The more useful question is what Cordyceps may actually do in humans. It is one of the functional mushrooms most associated with energy, stamina and exercise performance, but the human research is promising in places, negative in others, and very dependent on the exact species and preparation being studied.
What is Cordyceps?
Cordyceps is a broad group of parasitic fungi. Two names appear frequently in supplement and exercise research: Ophiocordyceps sinensis, formerly called Cordyceps sinensis, and Cordyceps militaris.
Those names are not interchangeable. Neither are the products made from them.
Wild O. sinensis is rare and expensive. Some human trials instead use cultured or fermented preparations such as Cs-4. C. militaris can be cultivated and is another common source used in modern products and research.
This distinction matters because a result from a Cs-4 trial cannot automatically be applied to a C. militaris fruiting-body extract, and a study using a multi-mushroom blend cannot tell us exactly how much of the result came from Cordyceps alone.
Why is Cordyceps associated with energy and stamina?
Cordyceps has a long history of traditional use as a tonic, particularly around fatigue and vitality. Modern research has focused heavily on oxygen use, exercise thresholds, endurance, recovery and cellular energy metabolism.
That research is the reason Cordyceps appears so often in products marketed for active lifestyles. But “studied for exercise performance” is not the same thing as “proven to boost energy.” Human trials have produced mixed results.
What do human exercise studies actually show?
One of the better-known studies was a 2010 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults aged 50 to 75. Participants took a specific Cs-4 preparation for 12 weeks.
The Cordyceps group improved two exercise-threshold measures: metabolic threshold increased by about 10.5% and ventilatory threshold by about 8.5%. However, maximal oxygen uptake, or VO2 max, did not significantly improve.
That is an interesting result because it suggests a possible effect on exercise efficiency at submaximal workloads. It does not show that Cordyceps universally increases aerobic capacity.

A different trial reached a much less exciting conclusion. In trained male cyclists, five weeks of Cs-4 at 3 grams per day did not improve VO2 peak, ventilatory threshold or endurance time-trial performance.

Those two studies illustrate the central issue with Cordyceps research: outcomes can differ by population, preparation, training status, dose and study design.
What about Cordyceps militaris?
Cordyceps militaris has also been studied in exercise settings.
A randomized study in recreationally active adults tested a mushroom blend containing C. militaris. After several weeks, researchers reported improvements in selected measures including VO2 max and time to exhaustion.
That study is useful, but it needs an important asterisk: participants consumed a mushroom blend rather than isolated Cordyceps. We therefore cannot say the Cordyceps component alone caused the effect.

A 2026 review of human C. militaris exercise studies reached a cautious overall conclusion. Some trials report improvements in selected performance or recovery outcomes, but the evidence remains inconsistent and is limited by small sample sizes, different preparations, different dosing protocols and multi-ingredient products.
New in 2026: an acute Cordyceps militaris trial
A July 2026 randomized, placebo-controlled study looked at a single 1-gram dose of standardized C. militaris extract in 12 recreationally active young men before cycling exercise.
The study found faster post-exercise reaction time on a cognitive task and an increase in resting oxygen uptake. It did not show an improvement in the main exercise-related physiological measures during the cycling test.
That makes the study interesting, especially around cognition after exercise, but it is far too small and short to support a broad claim that one dose of Cordyceps improves athletic performance.
So does Cordyceps mushroom coffee boost energy?
Not in a way we can responsibly promise.
The most accurate interpretation is that certain Cordyceps preparations are being studied for exercise efficiency, endurance and recovery, with some positive human findings and some clearly negative ones.
There is another complication when Cordyceps is consumed in mushroom coffee: coffee itself contains caffeine. If someone feels more alert after a cup, caffeine, serving size, sleep, food intake, hydration and expectations can all play a role.
Research using several grams of a specific Cordyceps preparation also cannot automatically be translated into the effects of a serving of mushroom coffee containing a different extract.

What about recovery, immunity and metabolism?
Cordyceps research extends well beyond exercise. Laboratory and animal studies have explored inflammatory signalling, immune activity, oxidative stress, glucose metabolism and compounds such as cordycepin.
These areas are scientifically interesting, but most should still be described as preclinical research rather than established human benefits. A cell or animal study cannot establish that Cordyceps coffee prevents disease, improves immunity or treats metabolic conditions in people.
That distinction is especially important for food products, where dramatic wellness language can easily run ahead of the evidence.
Is Cordyceps safe?
Current human evidence suggests Cordyceps preparations are generally well tolerated, although the safety database is much smaller than it is for common foods or medicines.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health LiverTox review notes that reported side effects in clinical studies have generally been mild and uncommon, including abdominal discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, poor appetite or rash. Cordyceps has not been convincingly linked to routine liver-enzyme elevations or clinically apparent acute liver injury.

What should you look for when buying Cordyceps coffee?
- Species or ingredient transparency. “Cordyceps” can refer to different fungi and preparations.
- Fruiting body or mycelium disclosure. Know what part of the fungal material is being used.
- Powder versus extract. Research using one preparation should not automatically be applied to another.
- Testing information. Look for brands that can explain how their mushroom ingredients are quality checked.
- Realistic claims. Human research is more convincing than cell or animal studies, and mixed evidence should be described as mixed.

The bottom line
Cordyceps is more scientifically interesting than either extreme of the internet conversation suggests. It is not a zombie threat, and it is not a guaranteed endurance shortcut.
Some human studies suggest certain preparations may influence exercise thresholds, selected performance measures or post-exercise cognition. Other well-controlled trials show no meaningful performance benefit. The newest reviews still describe the overall human evidence as limited and inconsistent.
For Urban Calm, that is the right level of expectation: Cordyceps is a functional mushroom with an interesting research story, included as part of a coffee-first daily ritual rather than sold as a substitute for sleep, training, nutrition or medical care.
