Quick answer: A coffee subscription delivers the same coffee on a schedule you choose, usually at a discount. Before signing up in Canada, compare five things: the real discount, shipping cost, how fresh the coffee is when it ships, whether it ships from inside Canada, and how easy it is to skip, change or cancel.
Running out of coffee on a Monday morning is avoidable. A subscription solves that, and a good one also saves money. A bad one locks you into the wrong roast, ships stale beans from across the border, or makes cancelling a chore.
This guide covers how coffee subscriptions work in Canada and what to check before you commit. It is published by Urban Calm, a Calgary roaster, and we explain how our own subscription works at the end.
How a coffee subscription works
- Choose a coffee. Pick a specific roast, or a rotating selection if the roaster offers one.
- Choose a format. Whole bean, ground or single-serve pods.
- Choose a frequency. Most people pick every two, three or four weeks based on how fast they go through a bag.
- Get it delivered. Each order processes automatically on schedule, and you are charged when it does.
What to compare before you subscribe
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Real discount | A percentage off is only useful if the base price is fair. Compare the subscription price per bag with the regular price. |
| Shipping cost | Shipping on every order can cancel out a discount. Check the free shipping threshold. |
| Freshness | Coffee tastes best within a few weeks of roasting. Ask whether it is roasted in small batches and how long it sits before shipping. |
| Ships from Canada | Domestic shipping usually means faster delivery and no surprise duties or currency conversion. |
| Flexibility | You should be able to skip, change roast or frequency, or cancel online without fees or phone calls. |
| Format choice | If you switch between a drip machine and a Keurig, look for a roaster that offers both bags and pods. |
How to pick your delivery frequency
A 340 g bag makes roughly 20 to 25 cups, depending on how strong you brew. As a rough guide:
- One cup a day: one bag every three to four weeks.
- Two cups a day: one bag every two weeks.
- A household of coffee drinkers: two bags every two weeks, or a 2 lb bag.
Start with your best guess. A good subscription lets you adjust after the first delivery.
Whole bean, ground or pods?
Whole bean stays fresh longest because you grind right before brewing. Ground coffee is convenient if you do not own a grinder. Pods are fastest for a single-serve brewer. Our guide to better drip coffee covers grind and brewing tips for each.
How the Urban Calm subscription works

- Roasted in Calgary in small batches and shipped across Canada.
- Real roasted coffee: specialty Colombian Arabica, available as mushroom coffee with two organic fruiting body extracts per blend, or as regular coffee.
- Four roasts, every format: Onward, Centered, Dreamer and Lioness in whole bean, ground and K-Cups, for both mushroom and regular coffee. Regular coffee also comes in 2 lb bags.
- Change, skip or cancel any time before your next order processes. No cancellation fees.
- Shipping: $6.99 on orders under $60, free on orders of $60 or more.
The subscription discount does not combine with other promo codes. Tea is not available on subscription.

Can I cancel a coffee subscription any time?
With Urban Calm, yes. Cancel, skip or change before your next order processes and there is no fee. Other roasters vary, so check the terms before you subscribe.
Is a coffee subscription cheaper than buying bags one at a time?
Usually, if the discount and shipping work in your favour. Compare the per-bag price including shipping.
Can I switch roasts?
Yes. You can change your roast or format before your next order processes.
