Yes, mushroom coffee can contain caffeine. If it is made with real caffeinated coffee, the mushrooms do not make the caffeine disappear.
What causes confusion is that "mushroom coffee" describes a category, not one standardized recipe. Some products are roasted coffee with mushroom extracts. Others are instant mixes that use less coffee per serving, and some are coffee alternatives with little or no coffee at all.
Why caffeine varies so much
Caffeine depends on the actual product and preparation. Important factors include:
- how much coffee is in the formula
- the amount of coffee used per serving
- bean type and roast
- grind size
- brew method
- water volume and extraction time
That is why a claim such as "mushroom coffee has half the caffeine of regular coffee" should only be trusted when it refers to a specific tested product.
Does Urban Calm mushroom coffee contain caffeine?
Yes. Urban Calm starts with real specialty Colombian Arabica coffee and adds functional mushroom extracts. Our bagged mushroom coffee is not a caffeine-free coffee alternative.
If caffeine intake is important to you, the useful approach is to treat Urban Calm the same way you would another brewed coffee and account for your serving size and brewing method.
Does roast level determine caffeine?
Not reliably by itself. Light, medium and dark roasts differ in flavour and density, but the caffeine in your cup depends heavily on how the coffee is measured and brewed.
For choosing between Urban Calm's roasts, use taste preference first. Read Light, Medium, Dark or Espresso? How to Choose Your Mushroom Coffee Roast.
How much caffeine is considered reasonable in Canada?
Health Canada recommends that most healthy adults keep total caffeine intake to no more than 400 mg per day. Pregnancy and some other situations have different guidance, and individual sensitivity varies.
Remember that total intake can include coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks and other caffeinated foods or beverages.
Can mushroom coffee feel different from regular coffee?
People may describe different experiences when switching coffee products, but that does not prove the mushrooms changed the effect of caffeine. Serving size, brew strength, food intake, sleep, expectations and other ingredients can all matter.
If a brand promises "no jitters" or guarantees a specific energy response, look closely at whether that statement is supported by product-specific evidence.
What should you check before buying?
- Is the product real coffee, instant coffee or a coffee alternative?
- Does the company state caffeine information for that exact product?
- What serving size is being compared?
- Are other caffeinated ingredients present?
- Does the label make broad claims that apply to the whole category without product-specific evidence?

Frequently asked questions
Is mushroom coffee caffeine-free?
Not automatically. It depends on whether the product contains caffeinated coffee.
Is instant mushroom coffee lower in caffeine?
Some instant products are, but that is a formula-specific feature, not a rule for the category.
Can I drink mushroom coffee later in the day?
If the product contains caffeine, timing can matter just as it does with regular coffee. If caffeine affects your sleep, consider an earlier serving or a lower-caffeine option.
