Caffeine does not disappear all at once. Learn what half-life means, why adult metabolism varies and why one universal coffee cutoff time does not work for everyone.

Quick take: Caffeine declines gradually rather than switching off. Adult caffeine half-life is often reported around 3 to 7 hours, but there is substantial individual variation. Half-life is not the same thing as time until caffeine is gone.

What does half-life mean?

Half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a substance in the body to fall by half. If someone started with 100 mg of caffeine and had a 5-hour half-life, an illustrative model would leave about 50 mg after 5 hours, 25 mg after 10 hours and 12.5 mg after 15 hours.

That example is mathematics, not a prediction for one person. Human caffeine clearance varies substantially.

Why there is no universal cutoff time

Studies and reviews commonly report adult caffeine half-life in a broad range, often around 3 to 7 hours. Genetics and physiology can shift that. Habitual routines and the total amount consumed across the day also change the practical experience.

That is why a rule such as "never drink coffee after 2 p.m." is too absolute for an educational article. A better approach is to notice whether caffeine is affecting the way you want to sleep and move the last cup earlier when needed.

A later coffee is not the same as a larger coffee

Timing and dose interact. A small coffee later in the day and a large coffee earlier in the afternoon may leave different amounts of caffeine circulating by bedtime. This is another reason exact product dose matters more than vague words like strong or bold.

The useful takeaway

Caffeine fades gradually. Half-life gives you a useful framework, but individual metabolism varies enough that timing advice should stay practical rather than pretending one clock time works for everyone.
