There is a version of wellness that always seems to require one more thing.
One more product. One more habit. One more reminder. One more item on the counter.
That was not the direction Tara Duncan wanted when the idea for Urban Calm's mushroom coffee started to take shape.
Coffee was already there.
Coffee came before mushroom coffee
Urban Calm began with specialty coffee and a sourcing relationship connected to women producers in TimanĂ¡, Huila. Tara cared about the taste of the coffee, where it came from and how it was roasted long before functional mushrooms entered the product line.
That foundation mattered later. When she became curious about Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga and Cordyceps, the question was not, "How do I build a supplement brand?"
It was, "Can these ingredients fit into coffee I would still be excited to drink?"
A change in life changed the question
Tara has spoken openly about perimenopause and the way midlife changed how she thought about everyday routines. That experience made her more curious about what she was already doing and whether familiar habits could become more intentional.
It did not turn coffee into a treatment. It changed the questions she was asking.

Why coffee made sense as the anchor
Coffee has one major advantage over many new routines: people already know when to use it.
There is no separate alarm, no new preparation ritual and no need to remember where it fits. The habit already has a time, a place and a sensory cue.
That made coffee the right place for Tara to experiment with something new while keeping the part she already loved.
Why four roasts instead of one formula
If the whole point was to build around coffee people already liked, one generic roast would not make much sense.
Urban Calm developed four roast profiles:
- Onward Light
- Centered Medium
- Dreamer Dark
- Lioness Espresso
The mushroom pairings differ too, but the roast still gives each blend its coffee identity.
That is part of the "small choices" philosophy. Start with what you already know about yourself. If you like dark roast, begin there. You do not need to relearn coffee to try a mushroom blend.
Small choices became a brand principle
The same idea shows up beyond the coffee itself. Tara does not believe a useful routine has to look impressive from the outside. It has to fit real life.
That is why our 5-minute morning ritual is five minutes, not fifty. It is why we talk about value instead of pretending every premium product is automatically worth buying. It is why we encourage people to start with the roast they already enjoy.
Urban Calm's version of wellness is not "do more."
It is closer to: make the things you already do a little more intentional.
Where to start
If coffee is already part of your morning, that can be enough of an anchor. Choose a roast you like, brew it the way you normally would and let the routine stay familiar.
