Meet the four functional mushrooms used across Urban Calm's coffee blends and learn why species, preparation, research quality and the coffee itself all matter.

Urban Calm uses four functional mushrooms across its coffee blends: Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga and Cordyceps.

They are often grouped together under one wellness label, but they are different species with different histories, chemistry and research. It makes more sense to understand them individually than to assume every mushroom does the same thing.

Lion's Mane

Hericium erinaceus is an edible mushroom that has attracted research interest around cognition and the nervous system. Small human studies exist, but this remains an emerging field. We use Lion's Mane in Dreamer Dark Roast and Lioness Espresso. Read our Lion's Mane deep dive.

Reishi

Reishi, commonly associated with Ganoderma species, has a long history of traditional use. Modern research has examined a wide range of possible physiological effects, but findings depend heavily on the preparation and population studied. Urban Calm pairs Reishi with Chaga in Centered and with Lion's Mane in Dreamer.

Chaga

Chaga is a dark, woody fungus that grows on birch and other trees in cold climates. Much of the research commonly cited for Chaga is laboratory or animal research rather than large human clinical trials. That is a good reason to be cautious with dramatic health claims. We use Chaga in Onward and Centered.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps is a group of fungi with a long history of traditional use. Human studies have looked at exercise and performance-related outcomes, with mixed results. Some trials have reported changes in selected measures while others have not. Urban Calm uses Cordyceps in Onward and Lioness.

Why we pair two mushrooms with each roast

We did not want one formula repeated across four bags. Each blend has its own roast profile and two-mushroom pairing:

  • Onward Light Roast: Chaga + Cordyceps
  • Centered Medium Roast: Chaga + Reishi
  • Dreamer Dark Roast: Lion's Mane + Reishi
  • Lioness Espresso: Lion's Mane + Cordyceps

The pairings give each blend an identity, but roast preference is still a practical place to start. If you love dark coffee, you do not need to force yourself into a light roast because one ingredient sounds appealing.

What the research can tell us

Functional mushroom research is interesting, but there is an important gap between studying a specific mushroom preparation under controlled conditions and drinking a food product that contains it. Species, part of the fungus, extraction, amount and study design all matter.

That is why our educational content avoids promising medical outcomes. We would rather tell you exactly what is in the coffee and let the evidence develop than turn early research into certainty.

How we build our guides

Urban Calm combines published mushroom research, ingredient documentation, specialty-coffee standards and traceable origin information to make the whole cup easier to understand. We distinguish traditional use from emerging human research and update guides as the category evolves.
